Commentary:
FEAR NOT THE WORDS:
The airwaves of communication are filled these days with the kind of talking heads who use words day and night in order to divide people into groups they can manipulate for their own agendas. The effect of all this corrupt, slanderous and malicious TALK has taken its toll upon our country and the character of its citizens Is it really surprising that so many feel entitled, while others are angry and still others are perplexed with the way things are going in our nation, the economy and its culture.
With the power of a 24 hour spin cycle of news, gossip, misinformation and propaganda the talking heads of our generation which includes the politicians and representatives that speak for them, with all the media voices and those in positions of authority, oppress, vex and afflict with hardship the soul of the everyday citizen of our country whose only crime is to enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and the opportunities it brings to a free people.
The Word of God states in 1Corinthians 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
I can honestly say that for at least the last fifteen years I have hoped for a change in the conversation of our nation and its culture. It seems to parallel the times surrounding Lot, the nephew of Abraham. When it came time to separate from Abraham’s household, Lot was offered first to make a choice of which land and direction he would go, Lot chose the land toward Sodom and Gomorrah.
Genesis 13:11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.
He chose a land and place that at the time seemed prosperous and more abundant than anywhere else. Like our own nation today whose prosperity and abundance has long attracted immigrants from all over the world to come with an expectation of a better life.
Genesis 13:10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.
The testimony of God about the citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah contradicted their outward appearance, for the men of the city were exceedingly wicked sinners.
Genesis 13:13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.
In speaking of Lot’s deliverance from the judgment that fell upon Sodom and Gomorrah, St. Peter states by revelation of the Spirit that Lot was vexed with the conversation of the wicked.
2Peter 2:7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked.
The word vexed is defined from the Greek, (Strong’s reference) G2669 katapone, kataponeo oppress, vex 1) to tire down with toil, exhaust with labour 1a) to afflict or oppress with evils 1b) to make trouble for 1c) to treat roughly.
As I read this, I feel we are living in this very realm today. Like Sodom, our own country is
filled with similar corruption and wickedness flowing through all areas of the nation’s life and culture. The conversation and manner of behavior of so many officials and citizens of this nation literally afflicts the soul of righteous and good people and makes weary the heart and emotions of the people’s conscience toward God... and it seems to be only getting worse.
2Peter 2:8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)
My hope and expectation is that the Sons and Daughters of the Living God will lift their voices in prayer and supplication to the Lord, so that we as a nation might receive the forgiveness, mercy and loving-kindness of the Lord in this time of need.
The best thing we can do for ourselves and our neighbors is to become a spiritual activist. Activism is a word current and upfront in our culture today. There are all forms of activism… but I am not talking about gathering people together in a common cause for protest and justice. What I mean by spiritual activism is to activate our own spiritual Identity and relationship with God in Christ.
St. Paul writing to Timothy, said to stir up the gift of God that is in thee.
That word stir means to inflame your mind. He went on to say God has NOT given us a spirit of FEAR…but of Power, Love and a sound mind.
The return of our nation to a proper conversation (manner of life) starts with us the people of God themselves. Nothing will heal our citizens and nation more powerfully then a dedicated Body of folks who seek the Lord with diligence and seek His word for it’s deeper meaning and application. This alone will release blessings from above for you and our neighbors. Nothing brings more joy to the heart of Father God then His people who make HIM their delight.
